HOW TO CHALLENGE YOUR CREATIVITY

Creative thinking challenges the status quo”

There is enough debate over creativity already; what exactly is it and how can you be creative or improve on your creativity? This article is not to lend voice to the debate but to show how you can elevate your own level of creativity. Creativity is the ability to come up with new ways or better ways of doing things as the case may be and one of the major things that drive creativity is curiosity- asking various questions about a particular activity or phenomenon in order to have a better understanding of it. A better understanding of an activity will allow you to come up with ideas or thoughts that will, in turn, allow you to really express your creativity and that can only happen when you take your time to observe or listen rather than getting caught up in the constant rat race of life.

There’s a popular African proverb that says “He who asks for directions on where he is going will not get lost” which goes to emphasize the importance of asking questions in whatever field that you are as this will really fuel your thinking and channel it towards creativity. The problem most people have is not the fact that they are not creative or they do not recognize their creative side, it’s the fact that they do not know how to sustain their creativity but not to worry, this article is meant to provide an answer to that. Sometimes, we get stuck at one point or the other with no idea of what to do but it does not have to be that way as long as we can challenge ourselves regularly and put our brains or minds to test. Our creativity is like a muscle and it needs to be stretched from time to time so that it doesn’t go dormant; let’s examine ways by which we can actually challenge our creativity and take things up a notch:

  • Place restrictions on yourself: before you start thinking something else, it’s actually a positive move because it involves giving yourself shorter space to do what you normally do. There could be a particular everyday task that you do and it probably takes 1 hour; you can decide to spend 30 minutes on it to see how you will fare. This will pose a challenge as your mind will then have to come up with a way by which you can meet the deadline; this consequently brings out a creative side in you that you had no idea existed.

  • Inculcate collaboration: ever heard of ‘two good heads are better than one’? Well, it holds true when it comes to creativity. Maybe you feel like there is nothing new about what you’re doing, no problem. Just look for people in your field and interact with them; watch, observe and ask questions. This will give you a better understanding and open your mind to new insights that you never knew existed.

  • Take an ‘absurd’ view of situations: yes, remember creativity is doing things differently; well, you can challenge yourself and look at situations from a completely different angle that might look insane but a careful examination will provide with a deeper insight and you get to come up with ideas to move forward especially when you’re ‘stuck’ in that situation. It’s about reconceptualization such that instead of relying on the default thinking about such a situation, you just take a different route of thinking entirely.

  • Stay positive: sometimes, to really challenge your creativity ‘muscle’, you need to adopt a positive mindset especially when the problem seems to be breathing down your neck. That is actually the moment you need to stay calm and take an impartial view of the problem; this will open up your mind thus allowing you to come up with ideas that will even leave you in awe of yourself.

  • Take up mental exercises or games: one other way to challenge your creativity is to get involved in mental or logical reasoning exercises which actually stretch the brain and then you have to do some thinking before coming up with an answer which of course has to be different from the default answer that will first come to mind. It’s almost like twisting things around and making them look illogical when in the real sense, they are logical. It could be a speed exercise or an efficiency exercise or you could go for a board game like chess which has been shown to challenge people’s creativity from time to time.

So, you can see that we all have creativity in us and it just depends on how well we can tap into it and really challenge our minds. There will always be situations around us that require our creativity and as such, we need to be ready.

There is more to creativity. Indeed everyone needs to be creative to achieve his or her desired goals. It also goes beyond achieving goals, through being creative, we can be proactive enough to solve unplanned and unforeseen occurrences.
