Why Schools Don’t Teach Entrepreneurship

 

Let’s first define entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is a field concerned with organization management and assumption of risk of business or enterprise and people involved are called entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship leads to development of the capacity of young kids in creative thinking as well as starting up a company and looking at the economy of the world today as a whole, entrepreneurship is more important in the school curriculum today more than ever. It is quite important because it sets students on their way to attaining success in life teaching them how to reason beyond the four walls of a classroom while at the same time preparing them in advance on how to deal with challenges that they might face in life.

Entrepreneurship actually allows the talents of students to be groomed and set for expression in a way that will allow these students to contribute effectively to their immediate community and to the economy of the nation at large. This is because entrepreneurship stimulates critical thinking, while also providing students with the needed collaboration and communication skills that will make them an excellent provider of jobs which obviously will improve the economy of the country.

So why then is entrepreneurship not a part of the curriculum being taught in schools? Well, for quite a number of reasons. First thing is that, entrepreneurship is like a life lesson and does not exactly have written down lessons that can then be used as a guide to teach students. It’s a bit difficult to find a place for it in the curriculum.

Secondly, the school system is designed to think collectively and not individually which means there has to be a joint decision among the school boards for the subject of entrepreneurship to be taught in schools and presently, there is not much people advocating for that and as a result, entrepreneurship still finds itself on the peripheral of school curriculum.

Another reason is that school today is run as a business and the idea is to get people to invest in formal education; so as long as the normal subjects are taught and students are prepared for advanced courses in colleges and universities, then there is really no place for entrepreneurship. More so, add to it the fact that teachers are not equipped to teach entrepreneurship because it is more practical than most fields as it involves solving people’s problems. So, this means that the person to teach it will not just be teaching from a note if he or she is able to get one, but from experience.

Entrepreneurship encourages you to invest in yourself through self-education which will mean ‘ignoring’ the lessons of formal education and picking up real life lessons which will definitely be bad for business from the view point of schools. Schools also believe that teaching entrepreneurship might reduce the value that formal education holds considering it lacks formal notes that can be used as basis to add it to the school curriculum.

Basically, schools just feel that it’s impractical to teach entrepreneurship due to its practicality as it is believed that it might defeat the purpose of formal education. Anything that challenges conventional thinking will offend a large group of people. What are your comments?
